5 Benefits to the Change in Australia's Stage 6 Syllabus

According to Braslavsky, a curriculum is an agreement among educational professionals on what students and pupils should take on during specific periods of their lives. Furthermore, the curriculum defines "why, what, when, where, how, and with whom to learn". Hence, the importance of a continual improvement towards Australia’s syllabus in senior years of Stage 6.

A curriculum is also defined as skills, performances, attitudes, and values expected of pupils to learn from school. This defines important outcomes, relevant material and a planned schedule to assist the development and learning of students studying the Australian curriculum.

In Australia, the change in syllabuses began nationwide in 2014, after a curriculum development process that began in 2010. Previously, individual State's Education Department were governing their own independent curriculums. Now, the Australian Curriculum consists of one curriculum covering eight subject areas through Year 10 (inclusive of electives), and another covering fifteen subjects for the senior secondary years including subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics.

A team met earlier in the year to determine new learning objectives, and another team researched material and supplies to be used in the classroom. With so many changes, it was time to develop and revise aspects of the curriculum.

The benefits of this change in the syllabus include:
  1. A new mode of learning is achieved in which the students are exposed to. Students are opportune to acquire valid knowledge.
  2. Regular Changes in the science syllabus improve the knowledge capacity of the students as they are exposed to new scientific discoveries and experiments.
  3. A frequent check in the syllabus improves the teachers' techniques and method of teaching. Abstract topics, especially in Physics and Chemistry becomes real and imaginary to students.
  4. More experiments are performed to give students a clearer understanding of each topic which improves their understanding and broaden their intelligence.
  5. A better cohesion between the bridge between final high school years and further tertiary studies.
